A strainer is an equipment that separates solid particles mechanically by using perforated plates or mesh. Typically, strainers can separate solid particles with a size of 1 to 0.0016 inches. This equipment is used in pipelines to protect process equipment such as condensers, heat exchangers, pumps and compressors, flow meters, nozzles, turbines, and steam traps. Strainers often use mesh for filtration. In natural gas pressure reduction stations, the strainer can be used as an auxiliary equipment for filter separators. In this way, when the filter requires maintenance, the strainer temporarily performs gas

  • purification. Strainers require cleaning, depending on the amount of impurity in the fluid and their operating hours.

Different types of strainers

  • Type Y Strainers (APF-YST) and Basket Type (APF-BST)
  • In vertical tubes, type Y strainers or basket types are used. Baskat-type strainers can also be used in horizontal pipes or pipes with low slopes. Type Y strainers and most types of Basket-type strainers can be designed to be cleaned without the need for operator involvement. Basket-type strainers are equipped with quick-opening closures to make cleaning or replacing the filter easier.
  • Temporary Strainers

Where financial costs are an issue a temporary filter may be installed in the pipeline route.

Design considerations for this type of filter include:

  • They have a lower free area than the Basket-type strainers.
  • The pipeline should be opened to inspect, clean, or remove these strainers.
    • It is difficult to achieve structural strength, especially in large sizes, and in the case of using wire mesh as a filter.

These filters are often used during the start-up phase and remain in the pipeline during operation. Like other types, temporary strainers require periodic maintenance to ensure efficient operation.

    • T-type strainers (APF-TST)
    • T-type strainers are commonly used to protect the pump or other applications with low impurity volume. These strainers have several advantages over other types of strainers. Its low-volume design is suitable for applications with limited space, and installation is possible vertically or horizontally in the pipeline.
