For immediate leak detection in the gas stream, it is necessary to odorize the natural gas. This prevents the formation of explosive gas/air mixtures that are very dangerous. Odorizing materials used in natural gas odorizing systems must meet certain safety requirements. Their smell must be detectable even in great dilution to alert a gas leak. Oftentimes, volatile organic compounds of
sulfur, such as tetrahydrothiophene heterocyclic sulfur (THT) or mercaptans are used as odorant material.
One of the techniques for odorizing natural gas is to pass a small amount of gas, with a slightly higher pressure than the main pipeline pressure from a reservoir container of odorizing liquid. The gas branching, absorbs a relatively high concentration of the odorizing material and then returns to the main pipeline. The odorizing material spreads throughout the pipeline. Unlike the injectable type, this type of odorizer does not have a pump to inject the odorizing material into the pipeline, but it still uses the delivery system of the odorizing material from the storage barrel to the odorizer. Also, the systems for regulating the pressure of the incoming gas to the odorizer, the safety valves, and the level indicators (Level Gauge) are installed on these odorizers to allow safe and reliable operation.
Apadana Petro Farayand odorizers are designed and manufactured for safe odorizing of natural gas, propane, biomethane (renewable natural gas), and biogas.
